United Church of Christ News: President Obama appoints UCC transgender leader to presidential council

A member of the United Church of Christās former Executive Council and a transgender leader within the denomination has been appointed to serve on President Barack Obamaās Advisory Council on Faith-based Neighborhood Partnerships. Barbara Satin is the first transgender woman to serve on the advisory council.
"Given the current political climate, I believe it's important that a voice of faith representing the transgender and gender non-conforming communityāas well as a person of my years, nearly 82ābe present and heard in these vital conversations," said Satin, who was involved in the churchās 2003 decision to affirm the inclusion of transgender people in the full life and ministry of the UCC.
